Fuel Cost Calculator Nepal: Estimate Trip Cost in NPR

Jaidip SubediPublished 29 April 202611 min read

You are planning a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Or your office commute costs are eating into your salary. Or you run a delivery service and need to quote fuel charges to a client.

Before you leave the house or sign a contract, the Fuel Cost Calculator helps you estimate how much petrol or diesel the trip will consume and what it will cost in NPR.

Enter your distance in kilometres, your vehicle's mileage in km per litre, and the current fuel price in NPR per litre. The calculator applies a straightforward formula and gives you an instant cost estimate.

Disclaimer: This calculator is for planning and estimation only. It does not reflect live fuel prices. Always check the latest price announcement from the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) before a long trip. Actual fuel consumption will vary based on road conditions, traffic, vehicle load, and driving habits.

Why Estimate Fuel Cost Before a Trip?

Fuel is often the largest variable cost in any road trip or daily commute. A rough mental calculation — "it's about 200 km, should be fine" — often misses by 20–40% once you factor in traffic, hill climbs, or AC use. That gap matters whether you are planning a weekend trip to Chitwan, quoting a delivery rate, or budgeting a monthly vehicle expense.

A pre-trip estimate also tells you whether you need to fill up before leaving, or whether your current tank is sufficient.

    The Formula

    The calculation has two steps:

Step 1: Fuel needed (litres) = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/litre)

Step 2: Cost (NPR) = Litres needed × Fuel price (NPR/litre)

That is all there is to it. The calculator performs both steps instantly.

Note on currency: All amounts are in NPR — Nepali Rupees (shown as Rs). When entering the fuel price, use the NPR/litre price announced by NOC.

How to Measure Your Vehicle's Real-World Mileage

This is where most people make the biggest error. The mileage figures in a manufacturer's brochure are measured under ideal conditions — flat road, constant speed, no load, no AC. Real-world mileage in Nepal is nearly always lower.

Here is how to measure your actual mileage:

    1. Fill your tank completely and note the odometer reading.
    2. Drive normally for at least 200–300 km (city + highway mix if possible).
    3. Fill the tank completely again and note the exact number of litres added.
    4. Divide the km driven by the litres added.

    Example: You drove 250 km and it took 18 litres to refill. Mileage = 250 ÷ 18 = 13.9 km/litre.

Typical real-world mileage figures in Nepal:

    Vehicle Type Typical Real-World Mileage
    100–125cc motorcycle 40–55 km/litre
    150–200cc motorcycle 30–42 km/litre
    Small car (1000cc) 14–18 km/litre
    Mid-size car (1500cc) 11–15 km/litre
    SUV/Jeep 8–12 km/litre
    Microbus 7–10 km/litre

City traffic, frequent stops, AC use, uphill driving, and a full load of passengers all reduce mileage. Use the lower end of the range for Kathmandu city driving and the upper end for open highway runs.

    Nepal Examples

    Example 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara

    • Distance: approximately 200 km (Prithvi Highway)
    • Mileage: 15 km/litre (mid-size car, mixed road)
    • Fuel price: NPR 180/litre (check current NOC price)

    Calculation:

    • Litres needed: 200 ÷ 15 = 13.3 litres
    • Cost: 13.3 × 180 = NPR 2,394
    • Round trip: approximately NPR 4,788

For a round trip, either enter the full 400 km as your distance, or calculate the one-way cost and multiply by two.

Example 2: Daily Commute in Kathmandu

    • Distance: 15 km each way = 30 km round trip
    • Mileage: 40 km/litre (125cc motorcycle, city traffic)
    • Fuel price: NPR 175/litre

    Calculation:

    • Litres: 30 ÷ 40 = 0.75 litres/day
    • Daily cost: 0.75 × 175 = NPR 131.25
    • Monthly cost (22 working days): NPR 131.25 × 22 = NPR 2,887.50

    Example 3: Delivery Service Quote

A courier needs to quote fuel charges for a 60 km round trip in a microbus.

    • Distance: 60 km
    • Mileage: 8 km/litre (loaded microbus, hilly route)
    • Fuel price: NPR 195/litre (diesel)

    Calculation:

    • Litres: 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 litres
    • Cost: 7.5 × 195 = NPR 1,462.50

Add 10–15% as a buffer for traffic and detours: approximately NPR 1,600–1,680 for the quote.

    Monthly Fuel Budget

To estimate your monthly fuel spend:

    1. Calculate your daily round-trip distance
    2. Multiply by the number of days you drive per month
    3. Apply your km/litre figure and the current fuel price

    Example:

    • Daily commute: 30 km round trip
    • Days driven per month: 25
    • Total monthly distance: 750 km
    • Mileage: 12 km/litre
    • Monthly litres: 750 ÷ 12 = 62.5 litres
    • At NPR 182/litre: NPR 11,375/month

This kind of monthly estimate is useful for personal budgeting and for employers reviewing vehicle allowances.

What the Calculator Does Not Include

The calculator estimates fuel cost only. The following are not included and must be added separately if you need a full trip cost:

    • Toll charges — several highways in Nepal have toll booths (Prithvi Highway, Narayanghat–Butwal, Kathmandu ring road exits)
    • Parking fees — especially in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Birgunj
    • Maintenance — oil changes, tyre wear, servicing — these add to per-km costs significantly
    • Driver allowance — if you employ a driver, their daily rate is separate
    • Live NOC prices — the calculator does not have a live price feed. Enter the price manually each time, especially before long trips

    Limitations to Keep in Mind

    • Hill driving reduces mileage significantly. A car getting 14 km/litre on a flat highway may drop to 9–10 km/litre on mountain roads. Adjust your mileage input accordingly.
    • AC use typically reduces mileage by 10–15%. On hot lowland routes (Terai), factor this in.
    • Traffic jams hurt mileage badly. Kathmandu valley commuters should use conservative mileage estimates.
    • Fuel prices change. NOC announces price revisions periodically. Check the latest price before entering it into the calculator.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator work for diesel as well as petrol?

Yes. The formula is the same. Just enter the correct diesel price in NPR/litre. There is no automatic petrol/diesel distinction — you enter whichever price applies to your vehicle.

Which currency does the calculator use?

Nepali Rupees (NPR), shown as Rs. Always enter the NOC-announced NPR/litre price.

Where do I find the current fuel price in Nepal?

Check the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) website or their official announcements. Prices are also displayed at fuel stations and reported in major Nepali newspapers whenever they change.

    Should I enter one-way or round-trip distance?

Enter whatever distance you want to calculate for. If you want the total cost for a round trip, enter the full round-trip distance (e.g., 200 km × 2 = 400 km). If you want the one-way cost only, enter 200 km.

My vehicle has two fuel tanks or dual fuel (petrol + CNG). How do I calculate?

Calculate each fuel separately and add the costs. For petrol + CNG setups, estimate what proportion of the trip runs on each fuel, calculate each at its respective price and mileage, and sum them.

Is this related to the VAT Calculator?

Not directly — fuel prices at the pump already include applicable taxes. However, if you need to calculate the VAT component on fuel purchases for accounting purposes, the VAT Calculator can help.
